No Math Required: The Appeal Of Sudoku Puzzles

A growing number of people are showing that they’re “hip to be square,” thanks to a simple-seeming-yet, at times, deceptively difficult-number puzzle that’s quickly becoming one of America’s national pastimes.

Sudoku is a number-based brain teaser that requires no math skills-just a bit of logic and deduction. Although variations have been introduced in recent years, sudoku is most frequently a 9×9 grid, filled with a few “starter” numbers.

The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row and 3×3 region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once in each of three “directions,” hence the puzzle’s name, from the Japanese words su (“number”) and doku (“single”).

Originally called simply Number Place, the first sudoku was created by Howard Garnes, a freelance puzzle constructor, in 1979. Decades later, it’s still wildly popular, with millions of people gearing up for the challenge each day.

Sudoku is even moving beyond puzzle books and newspapers, now appearing on Nintendo DS Lite portable video game systems. This lightweight, portable unit revolutionizes the way video games are played-at home and on the road. Because it’s so easy to take along, it makes for an excellent way to get your sudoku fix while traveling; you don’t even need a pencil-just your gray cells.

Sudoku fans are currently finding themselves in number-puzzle heaven with “Sudoku Gridmaster” for Nintendo DS Lite. The system’s Touch Screen makes choosing or writing numbers easy. Players will find more than 400 puzzles to entertain and challenge themselves.

Sudoku is the most popular puzzle game in the world right now, and “Sudoku Gridmaster” puts hundreds of puzzles in portable form, making it a terrific idea for travelers. To satisfy novices and sudoku experts alike, the puzzles come in four difficulty settings: practice, easy, normal and hard.

“Sudoku Gridmaster,” available for the Nintendo DS Lite system, is sold online and at major retailers.

The Raw Food Lifestyle – How to Dine Out at Non-Raw Food Restaurants

Now that you’ve decided to eat a primarily raw-vegan food based diet, you may wonder how you can dine out at regular food restaurants. Of course you want to maintain and even grow your social life, right?

Right. Well you have good reason to be thinking ahead about this because dining out at restaurants and in other people’s homes is definitely going to happen. In fact, dining out is our culture’s most popular social activity.

Rest assured, it is possible eat a healthy, raw, satiating meal while out with friends or family. The key here, as with maintaining a raw lifestyle while traveling, is planning and packing.

Most likely you’re going to be ordering a salad. It can be a chicken salad without the chicken, a shrimp salad without the shrimp, or an order or two of the simple garden salad. If the restaurant offers an organic or local salad-even better!

Never be afraid to ask your server to “customize” a salad for you. What I usually do is create my own salad by looking at the menu and seeing what ingredients they have on hand (including vegetables used in entrée sides). I think this leads to the most gorgeous and most colorful salads. Ask for a big salad with greens, other than iceberg, as the base and lots of different chopped raw vegetables on it. Ask for as many different colors as possible. If the restaurant has any guacamole or avocado anywhere on the menu-great! Now you know they have avocados back there and can ask for avocado to be put on your salad as well if you want to.

For dressing you could choose the restaurant’s vinaigrette, lemon juice, or oil and vinegar on the side. I usually don’t worry about the house vinaigrette being entirely raw. After all, that’s what detoxing is for!

Your salad is most likely going to have people turning their heads in your direction asking “where was that on the menu? That looks great!”

Now, you may not get enough protein, fat, carbohydrates, or calories from this salad and this is where a bit of planning comes in handy. In your purse or pocket, I recommend bringing a handful of nuts or seeds, dried fruit (can be your dessert!), flax crackers, or a raw food bar. Whatever it takes for you to feel full and happy with your dinner.

You could also supplement your salad with hemp seeds and sea veggies but be prepared, as this will definitely turn some heads. It depends on how comfortable you are around the party you’re with. I know someone who does this to salads at regular restaurants and sticks with it. She wants to raise the vibration of the food before it reaches her mouth.

More tips for the raw foodist dining out at a non-raw restaurant:

  • Nuts and seeds on salads are usually toasted or candied.
  • Make sure to ask to hold the cheese or dairy-based dressings on your salad.
  • Bringing some sort of sweet with you is a great idea if you’re going to be tempted to eat a cooked/baked dessert that others will be eating (I used to bring a date rolled in cacao nibs and that would completely satisfy my chocolate cake desires).
  • If you’re not entirely “raw”, you can ask for plain steamed vegetables as an entrée.

Others in your party may or may not notice what you’re doing. If you’re comfortable, confident, and nonchalant about what you’re doing, they probably won’t notice. They’re more likely to notice and focus on you if you feel uncomfortable and embarrassed about it yourself. I’ve found that others are usually really interested in what I’m eating and will even comment on how good my salads look! If people ask about your diet, have a simple definition planned and memorized that you can give them. If you don’t want the entire dinner conversation to focus on raw foods, just say it’s how you prefer to eat right now or you’re trying something new out for a while. In a nutshell, choose your line and deliver it in a positive and confident way.

If you’re not comfortable dining out with others on the raw food diet and lifestyle, you can always eat beforehand and let others know you had a late lunch or breakfast. Just make sure to bring a snack in your purse or pocket just in case you’ll be out for a while.

In time, you will definitely get used to how to eat out on a raw food diet. Dining at fine restaurants may not be as fun as it used to be, but that’s because you know you can eat a much healthier and more satisfying meal at home for pennies on the dollar now. Propose a night out for your non-raw friends at your favorite raw restaurant. This is a great way to introduce them to raw foods and all they have to offer.

Soon we’ll need an article of tips to help cooked food eaters survive in the raw-vegan world!

WoW Cooking Guide

My favorite online game to play is WoW (World of Warcraft) and that is why I am writing this short WoW cooking guide article. I am going to show you a brief overview of the cooking skill in the game WoW. When I say WoW I am referring to the MMORPG World of Warcraft and that is how I will be referring it through out this article.

OK the first thing you will have to do to start cooking in WoW is to visit a cooking trainer to learn the skill. Most of the major cities in the game have cooking trainers and you can get directions to them by asking a guard in the city. Once you find the trainer you will want to learn the apprentice cooking skill and all the recipes you can learn at the moment. You will also want to learn the skill to build a fire so you can cook just about any where you want. This can come in handy if you are out farming material to cook with and are not near a fire source to cook with. You will need to carry a flint and tender and some simple wood in your inventory to build a fire after you learn the skill.

OK now that you have learned all your skills you can buy some ingredients from a cooking supplies vendor and you should be ready to start cooking. You can also buy the flint and tender and the simple wood to build your own fire from the cooking supplies vendor. Just remember that when you reach certain levels you will be able to learn new recipes and you will have to visit the cooking trainer to learn these new recipes.

To gain skill points you will need to make items that you can cook and this will raise your skill points. You can see these items by opening your cooking interface and the cooking icon to do this should be in your spell book. When you open this interface you will notice some things are color coded with orange, yellow, green, or maybe even gray. As you cook items these will change as your skill level goes up. You will want to try and cook items that are colored orange to guarantee skill points that way will gain a point for each item cooked. If you cook items that are yellow or green you are not guaranteed a skill point. If you cook items that are gray you will gain no skill points because your cooking skill level is to high for these items.

There is six different level classes in WoW cooking that you will have to gain as you progress. These different levels are attained by reaching certain skill levels in cooking. You will learn these levels from a cooking trainer once you reach these skill levels. Here is a brief over view of the different levels:

  1. 1-75 Apprentice (Visit trainer)
  2. 75-150 Journeyman (Visit trainer)
  3. 150-225 Expert (Purchase the book called Expert Cookbook from a NPC vendor)
  4. 225-300 Artisan (must complete quest)
  5. 300-375 Master (Purchase the book called Master Cookbook from NPC vendor in outlands)
  6. 375-450 Grand Master (Visit trainer in Northrend)

In order to learn the expert cooking skill you will need to purchase the Expert Cookbook. You can get this book in Shadowprey Village in Desolace (Horde) or at Silverwind Refuge in Ashenvale (Alliance). There should be a NPC vendor in these two areas to purchase it from.

In order to learn the artisan cooking skill you must complete some quests. The cooking trainer named Zamja in Ogrimmar (Horde) is where you should be able to start the quests. If you are alliance a NPC named Daryl Riknussun in Ironforge should be able to help. You will need a 225 Cooking skill to start the quests and a minimum player level of 35 to learn artisan cookin.

You can learn master cooking from a book sold by cooking trainers in Hellfire Peninsula. The horde can buy their book from a NPC named Baxter in Thrallmar. The alliance can get there book from Gaston in Honor Hold.

You can learn the grand master skill from cooking trainers in Northrend. Just visit your factions cooking trainer.

OK that is a quick over view of the cooking profession in the game wow. I hope this wow cooking guide has helped you get a better understanding of the wow cooking profession. If you enjoyed this guide and would like more info on the wow cooking profession I recommend this site: Wow Cooking Guide

The cooking profession is a great way to make more gold in WOW so I would recommend leveling it up.

2006 Houston Astros Preview

2005 Overview:

For the second straight year in a row, the Houston Astros overcame a horrible start and spotty offense to capture the National League wildcard. Houston rolled past the Cardinals en route to becoming National League Champions only to lose in a 4 game sweep to the World Champion Chicago White Sox.

Despite missing the first month of the season, slugger Lance Berkman (.293 24 82 RBI) was able to establish himself as one of the best power hitters in the game while 3rd baseman Morgan Ensberg (.283 36 101) also emerged as a prime time offensive force leading the team in HR (36), RBI (101), and slugging percentage (.557). The ageless wonder Craig Biggio (.264 26 69) joined Jason Lane (.267 26 78) and Mike Lamb (.236 12 53) to help complete the rest of the starting lineup.

On the pitching side, starter Roy Oswalt (20-12, 2.94 ERA) was able to combine strong power numbers with excellent control in 2005 while Andy Pettitte (17-9, 2.39 ERA) bounced back from an injury-ridden 2004 season to pitch over 220 innings. Roger Clemens (13-8 1.87) at the age of 44 still was able to post respectable numbers joining superstar reliever Brad Lidge (4-4 2.29 42 saves) to provide the Astros with a season ending 89-73 record.

Off Season Moves:

The Astros didnt make too many moves in the off season only because they really didnt need to. Their biggest acquisition was signing free agent Preston Wilson (.260, 25 90) who was picked up to help provide more offensive stability and potentially replace Bagwell (who may or may not return in 2006). Reliever Trever Miller (2-2 4.06) was also added to help an already strong bullpen.

2006 Analysis:

Much of the same faces will return in 2006 with Craig Biggio (94 Runs) and Willy Taveras, who led the team in stolen bases with 34 setting the table for the rest of the lineup. The Astros are hoping Tavares will learn to become more patient in his sophomore year and produce more walks. If Bagwell doesn’t come back full-time, Berkman will likely move over to 1B with the newly acquired Preston Wilson expected to play leftfield.

Roy Oswalt is expected to once again return as the ace of the staff after putting together back-to back 20 win seasons. 33-year-old Andy Pettitte has lost significant time to injuries in 2 of the last 4 seasons so the Astros are hoping he can be healthy for an entire 2006 campaign. Clemens is not expected to return and his regular season performance will be missed. He was not offered arbitration in the off season.

Houston is looking to their number 3 starter Brandon Backe (10-8, 4.76 ERA) to find more consistency in 2005. While Wandy Rodriguez (10-10, 5.53 ERA) and Ezequiel Astacio (3-6, 5.67 ERA) will remain the likely candidates as the fourth and fifth starters. With Brad Lidge, Chad Qualls, former Met Dan Wheeler, lefty Mike Gallo and newly signed Trever Miller, the Houston bullpen is deep and perhaps one of the best in all of baseball. Expect the Astros to receive some competition from the Cubs and St. Louis in 2006. If the pitching can hold itself together and the offense at least match the same numbers as last year they should find themselves in the thick of things within the NL Central.

Algarve Portugal, The South’s Delight

Algarve or as it was baptized by the Arabs as Al Gharb meaning ‘to the west’, is the most southern province of the eleven that Portugal has been divided into. Its variety in terrain which starts at the small town of Odeceixe on the west coast, nicely tucked into the Espinhaco do Cao mountain range bordering the coast and the brave Atlantic Ocean to the west. Its shoreline runs down through Aljezur, symbolic in the Portuguese history thanks to its castle which is one of the seven that appear on the flag of Portugal. Still enjoying the different shades that the fertile valleys offer, you continue along the shoreline to Alfambra, a walled in city and well-known as a fishing village and tourist attraction. To the most western tip is the Cape of Saint Vicent and to the town of Sagres where Henry the Navegator first started his navigation school. At this point, you have come to the come into contact with the most attractive Algarve beaches. Long soft sandy stretches which enclose secret coves at the beginning where the outline of the coast is extremely flat around the towns of Lagos but after the city of Albufeira it turns into cliffs. Not leaving the hypnotizing view of the Atlantic, your car hire seems to know the route and continues on to Faro, the capital of this area after having taken this title away from the city of Silves in 1577. Here in Faro you have the main gateway into this southern region when arriving at this well-prepared international airport for your holiday stay. But there is still more beach towns like Tavira, a very historic medieval town and Castro Marim another city surrounded by a protective wall. From here, the journey northward following the Guadiana River, which is the natural border between Spain and Portugal.

Saved by its Ancestors

The Algarve region has seen all the cultures beginning with the Lusitanians, Celtics, Romans and Arabs who were forced out of Faro in 1249 by Sancho II. But thanks to the combination of all these people, especially the Arabs, the Algarve province ( http://www.lisbon-and-portugal.com/algarve/algarve-portugal.html ) now has a strong production of olive trees which produce rich olive oil, figs and almonds. It is said that the almond trees were a gift from a Moorish sultan who was in love with a Nordic princess. She dearly missed the snow covered ground in winter and what most resembled that were the almond trees in full bloom in the spring. From this, the Algarve makes a rich dessert from almonds, figs, eggs and sugar called ‘morgados’. And thanks to the dry weather, pears, tomatoes, melons and grapes are among the delicious fruits available year round.

Algarve Wine, A Sweet Caress for Your Lips

Grapes in Portugal are synonymous to wine, and Algarve has quite a variety. The exportation of wine from this region started under the Muslim domain and reached its climax in the 14th and 15th centuries. Lagos, Portimao and Tavira are the principal wine producers.

+ The Algar Dry from Lagos is a dry wine, served very cold for appetizers. The dry and sweet moscatel wines are aged in oak barrels for at least seven years and have about 18% alcohol content.

+ Alfonso III is another dry wine from Lagos and also served very cold.

+ Cruz de Portugal is a smooth red wine which should be served at room temperature for dessert.

+ From Tavira you have Licoroso de Tavira which is very sweet and dark in colour, served at room temperature.

+ Medronho is a type of liquer very well known all over the Algarve region and usually found in the typical ‘tascas’ or taverns and served in glasses from Oporto.

Cute places to see around Portugal

Between Tavira and Castro Marim, one can easily manage a nice beach day in Monte Gordo and a leisurley stroll through the Natural Reserve Park to appreciate the marvellous view of pink flamengos and long-legged storks soaring in and out of sight. For golf lovers, near Albufeira and hidden among pine trees and the shore you will find Villamoura with its campestral fields for playing a relaxing game of golf. Wherever you go in this region, be it on the coast or deep in the forest area, there are all kinds of hotels with great facilities for your stay in Algarve or the capital of Portugal, Lisbon.

World travel and tourism is generating in excess of US$7 trillion a year.

World travel and tourism is generating in excess of US$7 trillion a year, and is expected to rise to over US$13 trillion over the coming decade according to the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) research, sponsored by Accenture and prepared by Oxford Economics. The magnaminous size of the industry has resulted in a proliferation of booking engines and business opportunities to sell membership packages worth substantial discounts at hotel properties throughout the world.

How To Transport Your New Kayak? Get A Car Rack

Right after you buy a kayak, you’ll find you also need to buy a car rack to carry it. There are three types of car racks to choose among.

People who are shopping for car racks notice right away that there are many to choose from. There are many ways to travel with your kayak on the roof of your vehicle. You want to choose the best one for your kayak and your vehicle. You want to be sure the system that you pick is reliable and suitable for your kayak’s size.

All three types of kayak mountings are efficient, depending on the vehicle and the kayak.

Vertical Support System
The vertical support system normally goes on the rear of the vehicle and is usually used on vans or SUVs. The holder has upright poles and straps to keep the kayak in position.

Saddle System
The saddle system has four padded holders attached to the vehicle for the kayak to sit on. Straps wrap around the kayak to hold it fast.

Roller System
The roller system is similar to the saddle system except it has wheels that make loading and removing the kayak easier.

People usually travel with their kayaks on the roof. Each system works reliably with proper installation, and each system adjusts to the size of the kayak and works for all vehicles. So just choose one, put it on and hit the road and the water!

Coming Back To Haunt You

Children all tend to show signs of anxiety. This is understandable since as children have a lot of things to adjust to that adults have already allowed their minds to get used to. All those new experiences can be a little overwhelming for a child whose mind has yet to fully adapt to his own situation, let alone being thrust into an entirely unfamiliar environment. To a certain degree, a little child anxiety is actually perfectly normal and, to a degree, perhaps even expected. However, if your child does not outgrow his anxiety, it can lead to some psychological disorders later in life. If that occurs, a little social anxiety might turn out to be the least of your worries.

Difference Between Private Lenders And Banking Institutions

If you have decided to take or loan or mortgage then the facilities available are immense. There are wide variety of banking institutions, banks and brokers who are available to provide loan. It is only when an individual shops and finds the various lenders available and the schemes that they offer that he will be able to get the right loan at a good rate.

In case of a banking institution, the borrower is in contact with one person who is an employer of an organization and gives the various loan facilities offered by his institution. He is only an employee who gives the various facilities available by his employer. He helps borrower on the various facilities and choose what might be the best suitable for him. Once his personal credit information is approved, the employee processes the forms and helps the borrower and gets him credit.

The private lender is helpful when the individuals personal credit rating is bad and when the various banks and financial institutions refuse to give him any credit. The private lender asks for a security and charges high price. A mortgage broker on the other hand is only a middleman and gets credit to the individual from various sources that would be able to finance the individuals need. The rate involved might be high but a broker is the best solution for anyone with bad credit and who is unable to access any institution or banks for his credits. The broker or lender can sometimes give best deal to an individual when more business is promised. The individual can negotiate with a broker and get good credit facilities than when he goes online or approaches a bank.

One disadvantage with a private lender or broker is that the credit facilities are some time got from other places or outside the boundary of the individual and in this case the credit terms and conditions may not match that of the borrower and may not be to his satisfaction. Whereas a bank is a local institution and the employee can help get loans, which suits the need of the individual of the locality, and the credit facilities are tailor made to suit the individuals need.

Whatever is the difference between the bank and private lenders the borrower must shop around and know his limitations and the various facilities available from either of the sources and then approach that source which is most convenient to him.

How To Be A Modern-Day Fictional Heroine

It used to be so easy. All you needed was a thick mane of tousled auburn locks, high cheekbones and a determined little chin; add an ounce of determination and an event from your past that haunts you still. Then, wham! You were the perfect fictional heroine.

But now its not so simple. With television shows like Greys Anatomy and Ally McBeal, books like Bridget Joness Diary and Good in Bed, and movies like Miss Congeniality and Legally Blonde, were getting all sorts of mixed messages over how the ideal woman is supposed to be. Whats a modern girl who wants to hold herself up to impossible standards to do?

Simple! Just follow these guidelines, and youll be as witty, complex and neurotic as the rest of them. In other words you will be the perfect, modern-day fictional heroine.

Step 1 Be Flawed

This step is super easy, because come on, were all already flawed anyway, right?
Right!

Except for one little catch. It is necessary to adopt the correct flaws, and these three are non-negotiable.

1.)You must be self-involved. This includes comparing your own petty personal problems to things like death, war, and injustice, and finding some sort of unique parallel no matter what the situation may be. It also includes having a constant inner dialogue with yourself where you point out these parallels with witty commentary. For example: Even the news reminded me of him. Yesterday I saw this report that said routine circumcision in Africa could prevent 300,000 deaths in the next ten years. What a shocker! Chopping away at a guys penis could help eliminate pain, loss, and heart-ache. What will they think of next?

2.)You must have issues with food. If you plan to be a television or movie heroine, this means that you cannot eat. Period. If you plan to be a book heroine, this means that you must eat all the time, except when youre not eating, and then you should be thinking about eating. I strongly recommend the second option.

3.)You must become preoccupied with an unhealthy relationship. This includes but is not limited to, relationships with boyfriends, friends, mothers, fathers, roommates, and exes. Especially exes.(And make sure that your ex is dreamy, preferably with a new girlfriend who is in no way as good for him as you were.)

Step 2 Practice Retail Therapy

Todays modern day fictional heroine realizes one fundamental truth that there is no problem too big or too small that cannot be remedied with shopping. Again, there is a catch; you need to be careful of what you go shopping for. Hard and fast rule anything thats practical or cheap is out. Other than that, I have provided you a list of approved shopping items, with the most highly recommended items on top, and continued in descending order:

Designer shoes
Designer beauty products
Designer chocolate
Designer purses
Designer lingerie
Anything else designer
Clothes (This is listed as the very last option because although clothes shopping can be a lot of fun, if you happen to have gone up a size, the blow to your ego will be so enormous that it will negate the therapeutic aspect of said retail therapy.)

Step 3 Have a purpose, deeply question it, then either accept it or abandon it to find a new purpose.

Rather than go into unnecessary detail, I have created a handy-dandy chart. Just pick an option from each column and youll be good to go.

Column A

1.Youre a (lawyer, publisher, or banker) and you love the power and money.
2.Youre a (doctor, policewoman, or writer) and you love changing lives.
3.Youre a stay-at-home mom and you love your family.
4.Youre all of the above, and youve never been so fulfilled!
Column B
1.Its all getting to be too much and nobody understands you.
2.None of it means anything anymore and nobody understands you.
3.You wish you could have some time for yourself, and why doesnt anyone understand you?
4.Is this really what you set out to do? You did major in art history after all.

Column C

1. After meeting the right guy, you decide to chuck it all and live overseas.
2. After falling back in love with the guy youve been with for years, you decide to start your own home-based greeting card company.
3. After realizing that the nerdy guy is actually the one for you, you return to your career with a new sense of purpose.
4. Who needs health insurance anyway? You decide to take some time off just to focus on you.

Conclusion:

So you see; its really not that hard for truth to imitate fiction. Gone are the days of walking moors, wearing corsets, and dying of consumption. Nowadays all you need is a little attitude thrown in with a barely noticeable social complex. So get your credit cards ready, preheat the oven for those brownies, and start living your life as if everyone can (and wants to) hear what you have to say. A new age has arrived!

What A Few Good Heros Taught Me About Bodybuilding

Copyright 2006 Marc David

Posted on a Bodybuilding Message Board:

Hi everyone I’m 15 and was wondering what I can take for my muscle to grow? I have heard of muscle boosters or something like that so I was just wondering if there was anything like that that I could take in order for my muscle to get huge.

I might be thinking of steroids.

Answer:

Stop! What the HECK are you thinking? Why are we always looking for the short cut to the biggest gains while still being able to watch T.V.? I guess the word “hard work” isn’t something you really need to do if you know some handy-dandy SECRETS to building muscle.

Clarence Darrow, a famous trial lawyer, once said:

“As long as the world shall last there will be wrongs, and if no man (or woman) objected and no man (or woman) rebelled, those wrongs would last forever.”

Listen closely! The term ‘lifestyle’ means ON-GOING and NEVER ending. A shortcut has no place in bodybuilding and certainly no place in getting into the best shape of your life.

So what?

I can already hear the voices now like waves crashing against a rocky wall “why should I care?” Or the other one “what’s in it for me?”

A Blueprint for your Success:

* The more you know, the more educated you become from a cast of reliable sources and PASS that information on to your friends…

* The better off this industry will become…

* The FASTER you can AVOID mistakes…

* The FASTER you can make better LONG TERM progress!

FACT: According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse for Teens(NIDA):

“As part of a 2002 NIDA-funded study, teens were asked if they ever tried steroidseven once. Only 2.5% of 8th graders ever tried steroids; only 3.5% of 10th graders; and 4% of 12th graders.”

Add to this an article I read in the May 2004 issue of Flex magazine by Tom Prince. He profiled his career in a very thought provoking article called “When the Posing Stops.”

Tom Prince went on to explain his steroid use, his mad as a hatter like rush to the top, and eventually the pain he endures and his eventual kidney failure to reach a peak. The descriptions of his crumbling shoulder socket and the pain he must be in made me as sick as a dog.

At the time of the article, Tom Prince was 34 years old! He said:

“I will probably die younger than normal, 65 or something like that, but 65 is better than 35.”

STOP and ask yourself this key question:

Are the youth of today any different then me 16 years ago when I was looking at bodybuilding magazines and wanting to be ripped and muscular? In my mind, I was willing to take all kinds of supplements and do whatever training program I could to look like those guys in the magazine ads. They were my HEROS and inspiration.

Thankfully I didn’t go down that path.

Just last week, my friend (Yes I really have spoken on the phone with him several times) Tom Venuto sent out a issue asking people to take a look at the natural bodybuilders all over the Internet for inspiration.

Tom Venuto wrote:

“There ARE heroes and role models to look up to today, and you will find them in the drug-free bodybuilding movement.”

He’s RIGHT. In fact I know an older gentleman, Scott Hults, who’s a big fan of natural bodybuilding and has done wonders in this sport to educate himself and others around him that taking shortcuts isn’t the way to go and that hard work can pay-off at any age. If I can be in as good of shape as Scott when I’m older, I’d be lucky.

Think about it.

Toss this idea around, if you want to get better at something, you should do everything in your power to make the exercises HARDER, not easier.

Clearly you can see by now shortcuts simply don’t come without a price. If you are one of those people who wants to make working out and building muscle or losing fat easy as cutting thru a banana cream pie, you’ll never reach the goals you’ve set.

Richie Smith, a personal trainer with more horsepower in the gym then a Bugatti Veron, said “When you are child, your parents tell you to keep your hands off the stovethey tell you not to put your hand into the flame, because if you do, you’ll get burned. If youre serious about bodybuilding, you have to un-learn what you were taught as a child. When I train people, basically I’m telling them to put their hand right into the fire and keep it there. I have them train into and beyond the pain zone. That’s what makes you grow.”

Are you beginning to see how building muscle and changing your body is work but it’s fun? Building your body isn’t like FedEx … it simply, positively DOESN’T happen overnight. But one could also say … it’s human nature to avoid hard work.

Tom Venuto wrote in his natural bodybuilding blog, “Most people are on a constant search for the path of least resistance. A drug, a supplement, a ‘breakthrough technique’ a new machine, a shortcut in exercise formanything and everything they think will help them reach their goals with less effort and in less time. This is typical human nature. Unfortunately, this is also faulty thinking and you will NEVER become a champion with this type of attitude.

You can clearly see what I’m saying is certainly true…

If I could give you a training strategy that is GUARANTEED to increase your muscle and burn more fat, would you be interested?

MySpace to go Mobile

You know what? Helio has just announced a partnership with MySpace to provide MySpace on Helio which will be offered on this mobile device and offer things like messaging, MySpace layouts for your personal profiles and photo galleries.

This is a smart move by MySpace. Other social networking sites have faded away as they became less popular because they were not introducing new features in their offering. More than 60 million teenagers have a cell phone today and that number is growing rapidly. What better way to expand the community?

The key question is, will the MySpace community move to the new mobile device offering? Helios parent company, a partnership between Earthlink and SK Telecom have invested over $400 million in launching this new carrier. They project that they will need 3 million subscribers to recoup their investment. Many believe offering MySpace on this new mobile device will be just the ticket they need to attract many new teenage subscribers.

I would like to hear from all of you out there. Can you see yourself using MySpace on a mobile device? What advantages do you see?

But first, you need a good layout for your profile that will look good in your mobile phone. Get it here.

A Record 377 California Schools Honored With The Distinguished School Award

The California Schools created the California Schools Recognition Program in 1985. Its purpose is to publicize and reinforce California schools priorities, which are to improve student scholastic achievement and promote students based upon measurable objectives. The program identifies and honors public schools that exhibit exemplary and inspiring achievement. Though participation in the program is voluntary, the California Distinguished School Award is highly coveted.

To be considered for the award, California schools must meet a variety of eligibility requirements. These include designated federal and state accountability measures that are based upon the No Child Left Behind, Adequate Yearly Progress, and Academic Performance Index measurement programs. Approximately, five percent of California schools are selected each year for the award, with no fewer than 40 counties typically being represented.

The program alternates awards yearly between the elementary and secondary California schools. Year 2006 honors elementary schools.

California schools that meet the requirements complete an application and submit it to a team of local educators from across the state, which evaluate and score the merits of each school application. Schools with the highest scoring applications are selected as statewide nominees for the award. Nominated California schools then receive an onsite visit by a team of county school superintendents and members of the California Department of Education, who validate the accuracy of the application data.

Those California schools selected for the Distinguished School Award are honored at a statewide ceremony, where the state school superintendent awards a plaque and flag to each school. The program and annual ceremonies are funded through the generosity of prominent California corporations and statewide education organizations that believe educational excellence should be rewarded and encouraged publicly.

In 2006, a record 377 public elementary schools were honored with the California Distinguished School Award, surpassing the 302 elementary schools honored in 2004 the last elementary school award cycle. They represent the largest number of elementary school awardees in the 21-year history of the program.

The 2006 California schools awardees were chosen from 190 school districts in 40 counties. They were selected from the largest number of eligible elementary schools to date, setting another record for the program. Of the more than 5,000 elementary schools in California, 2,043 were eligible to apply for the 2006 award. California schools are proving that student scholastic excellence can be nurtured and consistently improved.

USG Sheetrock 400 Chicagoland Speedway

A jubilant Dale Earnhardt Jr. broke through for his first Nextel Cup victory of last years season, using a two-tire strategy and holding off Matt Kenseth to win at Chicagoland Speedway.
“I was worried I was going to go winless this year,” the relieved Earnhardt said after smoking the tires on his No. 8 Chevrolet and celebrating with his crew in the infield grass. “Now, let’s go out and do it again, win some more.”
Kenseth
led 176 of the 267 laps but wound up second after choosing to change four tires and falling behind on his final pit stop in the USG Sheetrock 400.
Earnhardt, NASCAR’s most popular driver, has had a mostly miserable season and had little to smile about until he turned in a third-place finish a week before at Daytona. He started 25th and spent most of the day hovering near the end of the top 10.
The plan to build a superspeedway in the third-largest market in the nation had been rumored for years. Auto racing executives and major-league sanctioning bodies had long maintained that the untapped market of Chicago was perhaps the most lucrative in the country.

The race to build a major speedway in the Windy City took its first step towards becoming a reality during an informal meeting between Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Tony George and Bill France in late 1995.

The Motorsports Alliance, consisting of George, France, and home-remodeling magnate John Menard, was formed in the spring of 1996 and immediately began considering sites that summer.

The first effort to begin the project was to focus on a 500-acre plot of land less than 30 miles from downtown Chicago, near the Dupage County Airport. Faced with constructing a facility that would be able to host NASCAR and the Indy Racing League on a small parcel of land, the trio decided that the extremely high price of real estate would not fit properly into the budget.

The Alliance was contacted by several communities that were interested in building the facility and even looked at sites as far west as Rochelle, before turning their attention to the small farm community of Plano, about 70 miles west of Chicago, in the fall of 1997.

A Time before Clock and Watches A Series (part 1)

How Time Was Measured Before the Clock

How many times have you wondered, What time is it? and turned to your wrist only to find you forgot to put on your watch. We have become so programmed to know what time it is and schedule our lives around it that it is second nature to bend your arm, turn your wrist and get the answer. It has not always been so easy, or even necessary as you will see by looking back to a time before clocks and watches.

Like Night and Day

The precision with which we measure time today is light years away from how it was done, not so long ago. Time was once measured completely by the universe around us and still is in a sense when you understand the science and physics behind the measurement of time and what makes a clock work (more on this in part 2). What earlier civilizations knew and relied upon each day was that the sun came up and went down and that block of time became a day. To measure greater expanses, the moon and its reliable cycles were also observed. The moon was used to measure the time period which came to be known as a month more technically a lunar month of 28 days or the time it took for the moon to go from new to crescent to full and new again.

Ancient Civilization

Even more than just observing the moon, sun, and planets, there are artifacts that show us that time was measured a bit more precisely. Early calendars and clocks were found in what is now Iraq, once the dwelling place of the ancient Sumerians, and consisted of a calendar that was divided into 30 day segments according to the cycle of the moon. It was then divided into 12 sections which corresponded to 2 hours of todays time. Further, the calendar was sectioned off into 30 more parts equivalent to 4 modern-day minutes.

Stonehenge is located in England and was built more than 4,000 years ago. Not much is completely understood about this mysterious structure, but the way it is positioned has scientists believing that it somehow was used to record seasons and the phenomenon of lunar eclipses and the like.

Sundials

The Sumerian culture passed away without the information about their timekeeping being discovered until more modern times. The next phase of more precise time measurement was used by the Egyptians. They created the Obelisk around 3500 BC which looked like todays Washington Monument, well-known to visitors of the Nations capital. This tall, tapered monument would cast shadows throughout the day, but was primitive still in how closely the time periods could be measured. It mostly reflected a change between morning and afternoon, and how the days would get shorter or longer with the seasons.

The sundial on the other hand was first used about 1500 BC and was a much smaller and more portable timekeeping device. It was divided into 10 equal parts with two additional segments representing twilight and dawn. The sundial itself then emerged from a horizontal plate to a bowl shape with pointer and inscribed lines to mark off the hours. It is believed that by 30 BC there were more than 13 different styles of sundials used in the evolving societies of Asia Minor, Italy, and Greece.

When one thinks about the precision of a finely crafted Swiss timepiece it is hard to imagine a time when time was so ambiguous. Could society function without time measurements to the very minute? Perhaps in another millennium society will wonder how we functioned living in just one time.

This is the first of a series of articles on the evolution of time measuring and how timepieces come to become what they are today.

V7 Digital Photo Printing

Photographs are a way of preserving a moment in our lives for the rest of our lives. Many of us have at least been tempted at the flashy array of photo printers which seemingly leap off the shelves at even the least tech-savvy. It surely seems old fashioned to talk about 35mm film and non-digital cameras in todays day and age. To our children, cameras not so feature rich with LCD screens and built in Wi-Fi is as foreign as Atari. However, the innovation of home photo printing is bringing about a new way of preserving our most precious memories. Not only do we have digital copies to keep with us for the rest of our days across hundreds of different archives, thanks to printer manufacturers such as Epson, Hewlett Packard, and Canon, we now have the ability to fill our photo albums, right from the comfort of our living rooms.

Whether it is Hewlett Packard with the award winning Photosmart 8250, Canon, with the sleek and stylish Selphy DS810, or Epsons PictureMate Express Edition, it seems everyone wants a slice of the home photo printing pie. Behind the looks, style, and hype of these printers are the facts. For example, Hewlett Packards Photosmart 8250 has become a legend in its own right for its amazing ability to print a 4 x 6 photograph in only 14 seconds. The Canon Selphy falls far short of Hewlett Packards mark, ringing in at 63 seconds for a 4 x 6 print. Falling even farther behind the pack is the Epson PictureMate Express Edition, although stylish, and easy to carry with convenient handle, there is nothing so convenient about having to wait a whopping 1 minute and 20 seconds to get a single 4 x 6 print. The Canon and Epson models dont fall completely short of Hewlett Packards newest pride and joy, however. Both the Canon Selphy DS810 and Epsons PictureMate Express Edition trounce the Hewlett Packard in portability. The Selphy 810 is the smallest form factor, measuring in at only 8.7″ (W) x 3.9″(H) x 8.7″ (D). The PictureMate Express Edition is portable enough to be designed with a sleek handle to care with while taking those long road trips or a simple picnic in the park. For added portability, the PictureMate Express Edition even has a car adapter so the printer can be used virtually anywhere. These features veritably slaughter Hewlett Packards Photosmart 8250 where portability is an issue.

All ringing in around the same price, (Hewlett Packard Photosmart 8250 $179.99 MSRP, Canon Selphy DS810 $149.99 MSRP, and Epson PictureMate Express Edition $149.99) Hewlett Packards leadership and innovation in the field has brought them to the top of the list. Having won several awards over the span of many years, including an Editors Choice award in PC Magazine for the Photosmart 8250 model, Hewlett Packard seems to be the name to beat and the way to go for any photographic entrepreneur who wants the most bang for his or her buck.

Low Cost Ways of Reducing or Preventing Back Pain

The vast majority of people will experience.some sort of back pain throughout their lives. When most people think of back pain treatments, they often think of expensive medications and surgical procedures.

However, many would be surprised to learn that low cost methods for treating back pain are available which are quite effective. Several studies have been conducted which show that getting a good amount of cardiovascular exercise on a regular basis is very effective at stopping back pain.

Many of these methods are low cost, such as hiking, swimming, or jogging. Cardiovascular exercises have been shown to be just as effective for treating and preventing back pain as many physical therapies. These activities are fun to do, and will keep both your back and the rest of your body healthy.

Some of you reading this article may be under the impression that this advice is common sense. In reality, many people don’t know how to properly exercise their backs, and give up easily when things become tough. Some are already unhealthy and overweight, and have developed bad habits which are difficult to break.

It is important to change your mindset. Instead of looking at cardiovascular exercise as a chore, incorporate it into your everday activities. If you have a job which is close to your home, start riding a bike to work once a week. Start small and work your way up.

Exercise is important for your spine and back. Humans aren’t designed to spend hours sitting in front of a computer or in traffic. We are supposed to work out our bodies, and when we don’t, problems like chronic back pain develop over time.

When people suffer from back pain, they often stop exercising entirely. They are under the false impression that exercising their backs will put them in even more pain. This is certainly true if they don’t exercise properly. The muscles surrounding the spinal column support your body, and need to be strong.

The weaker they are, the more pain you will experience. By exercising, you strengthen these muscles in your back, and they will become strong enough to support your body, relieving you of pain. You don’t want to wait until the problem becomes so severe that you need medical treatment.

The costs of healthcare are increasing, and people are finding it hard to afford care. The best type of treatment you can give yourself is prevention by exercising properly and keeping both your back and the rest of your body healthy.

Your First Car In USA

Your mobility depends too much on your possession of a private vehicle. You may go for a car, motorcycle or truck as your own vehicle. But due to severe weather conditions in many regions it is not a good idea to depend on motorcycles all the time. It is also not a good idea to have a truck or SUV as they drink lot of gas and the maintenance is high. Somewhere in the middle and perfectly positioned vehicle for Desi would be a car. There are various types of cars to suite your need.

What you should have

If you are a single man and do not depend primarily on your car for commuting to your work, then go for anything as you wish.

There are coupes which have capacity for 4 persons but only two big doors. Primarily these cars are designed keeping in view for two, driver and one passenger. The other model is the sedan which has capacity for 5 and has 4 doors. This can also be called a family car. Depending on the size of the car, they are categorized as Compact, Mid-sized and Full. Compact cars are very small in size and have a good mileage per gallon too. Some manufacturers even make two seated compact cars. The power of the compact car is also little less than the cars of other categories. There are other cars that have powerful engines and are rated as sports cars.

On the contrary, if you have a big family and need more space in your vehicle, then go for van/SUV. But I wont suggest this idea to people who have just come to US, before/after marriage and don’t have any kids.

Besides, it is always your dream and desire that makes you to go for a particular type and model. But before deciding upon something, you must give a thought to the other factors like, the mileage, sitting capacity, transmission, trunk capacity, engine power, ease of driving/safety, interior, power doors and anti-theft devices. Also your affordability plays a major role in purchasing a vehicle.

Do you have a driver license yet? It is most important to have one before going for a vehicle. Various states have different rules for issuing drivers license. You can logon to Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) sites to know about the pre-requisites and methods of getting one driver license for your state. Normally it involves a written examination, minor vision test and a road test.

The never-ending comparison

Now you have to decide whether to buy a new car or a used car. I wont suggest you any thing or force you to go for what I think is right, but you must know the good and bad things involved in each.

Used Cars

* They are cheaper.

* They may be old.

* They might have more than one owner.

* They could be purchased from private parties or authorized dealers.

* They might have gone through serious maintenance/repair in the past.

* They might have gone through an accident in the past.

* Some parts/components are just about to die.

* There may not be enough warranty/guaranty on some expensive parts.

* The mileage may not be good.

* They may need more maintenance.

* They may not be reliable for long drives.

* Resale may be a headache.

New Cars

* They are not cheap.

* They are covered under manufacturer/dealer warranty.

* Their fuel efficiency must meet the specification.

* There is the satisfaction of owning a new car.

* Easy to get a finance for new car than a used car.

* No need to worry about the engine, body, suspension, tyre, batteries and interior conditions.

* Insurance premium may be higher.

* Can only be bought from an authorized dealer.

There are many other things that can be discussed as advantages and disadvantages under both the headings. However, I don’t want to focus on them right now. If you are convinced to buy a new car, then go for it.

Your target

Now it is the time for you to decide the Make, Model and Type of your car. In US you will find hundreds of Make and Models (no Hind Motors/Maruti cars of course). From a Desi prospect I would say it is better to start with Honda/Toyota/Nissan. These Japanese car manufacturers know our requirement and never ditch us on the highways. The engines are good and prices are low. They run long enough before giving up. The life of a Honda/Toyota is considered to be 300K miles. But the look and interior designs are not at par with the American/European cars.

Buying a New Car

Take a cup of coffee, chat with your friends and go through some reviews before you decide upon the make model and color of your first dream car in USA. Check for the existing/upcoming models of your car by logging onto the sites. Select the color and interior and look at the car through the simulator. The most important thing that you must consider here is that, when the next model is going to be released. If it is very soon, then don’t go for it, because after you buy your car, you will see the newer model in the market and the resale value of your car will fall drastically.

Cars with automatic transmission and power window have good resale value. ABS and anti-theft devices are added advantages. Leather interior is as per your wish.

Now you have all the details in your mind and the budget is also finalized. Next step is to study the finance market and look for the bank/credit union who gives the best APR. Also don’t forget to decide upon your auto insurance. Find out a good insurance company and try to get a quote from them. The premium varies from place to place. With all these things set up, go to the Auto-Mall of your city. Go for a test drive for the car you have already decided. Beware of the car sales representatives. They will always try to sale you the most expensive car they have. But you shouldn’t deviate from your decision. Try to bargain with them for a possible reduction in their margin and ask for extra accessories.

What is the status of the loan? Have you arranged one or you want the dealer to make some arrangements for you? Always try to bring down the APR. If you are very new to US and don’t have any credit score, you may not get a good APR. However, dont worry about the APR right now. You can always refinance the loan with a better APR after you buildup the credit history after few months of repayment of the loan.

Once the deal is final, you need to sign some papers and then provide the Insurance details if you have. Otherwise, you could also provide the insurance agents phone number and the sales representative will talk to the insurance agent to get the car insured before leaving their premises (dont worry too much for the insurance premiums now, it is important to get your car insured before you drive out of the dealers premises, however you can easily change your insurance later, if you find a better one). In case you didn’t get any insurance, you can always go for binder insurance, but they are quite expensive, but you can always cancel them in the middle once you establish your insurance with somebody else and get the refund for the unused portion of your premium.

The next thing is to make the financial paper work. You will be guided to the dealers accounts department and one of the accountants will assist you in finalizing the loan and payment for the car. At that time they will try to sale an extended warranty for another 3 years after the manufacturers warranty. It is you who will decide for that. Don’t listen to them, but evaluate it being unbiased. They will try to sale so many other things like paint guard, gap insurance etc. I would suggest not to go with all these things except paint-guard.

After everything is over, they will apply for the vehicle registration/license plate to DMV on your behalf and give you the temporary ownership license (stuck to the windshield of your car). As far as I know, they wash the car and give you a full tank as a compliment before you drive your car back home.

New cars don’t give you much trouble as long as you do all the regular oil change and maintenance in time.

Buying a Used Car

Used cars are good but not as new cars. They are much cheaper than the new cars, but at the cost of your peace of mind. You can buy used cars from either a private party or from any dealer. Here also you have to decide your budget and the make, model and year of the car that you need. Also the other main factor is the odometer reading.

There are many sites that give you the links for used cars for sale. You can also refer to the local news papers for any such advertisement. There are places in some cities where people come with their cars for auction/sale. Since you are new, don’t go to such places. Rather get contact information from news paper ads or internet. Get the details of the car like make, model and year of the car, miles it has run, condition of batteries, tires and engine condition etc.

Now go to Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com) or Edmund (www.edmund.com) and try to evaluate the car. KBB will ask you some question depending upon the private trading or buying from dealer. After you enter data about the private trading car, it will show you an approximate value of the car.

Private Party

If you are buying a used car from a private party, then you need to be more cautious about certain things like, the engine condition, the body condition, the interior and the accident/maintenance history of the car. Don’t go for cars that have already run almost 300K miles (for Honda and Toyota). You can start locating for used cars for sale from various sources like, news papers, local ads and internet. After locating the availability near your place, prepare your matrix.

* Call each of them to fix an appointment for trial.

* Get the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) from the owner.

* Check for the approximate cost of the car using KBB or EDMUND sites.

* Compare the advertised price with the approximate cost that you arrived at.

* Use the VIN to find out accident/maintenance history from CarFax.com and check for any major incident. There will be a registration fee for CarFax.com, go for the one month pack.

* Talk to a mechanic for pre-purchase inspection of the vehicle. Mechanics charge around $50 per car. It is better to go to some brand names like Pep-Boys. They are good and reliable, but you may need to take an appointment beforehand.

* Go to the owner, see the car physically (for any visible dents, body color, torn airbag containers and interior) and then drive it with the owner.

* Take the car to the mechanic and have it inspected.

* (All the cars need a timing belt replacement after running for around 100K miles, so if the car is around or over 100K, then you need to figure out if the timing belt has been replaced, this information could be obtained from the CarFax report too. One thing you must remember that, in US, the auto spare parts are not that expensive, but the labor charge to install them is too high.)

* The mechanic will give you a report, in which it will indicate the current condition of the car and what needs to be fixed with a rough estimation.

* Check for the vehicle registration, is it current?

* Is the vehicle smog certified?

With the Kelly Blue Book report, CarFax report and the mechanics report, you can have a good bargain with the owner. If you really like the car and every thing looks OK to you, then start bargaining. Don’t focus more on the tires/batteries, they are not that important as the engine.

NEVER BUY A CAR THAT HAS A SALVAGED TITLE.

Once you have decided to buy the car, talk to the owner about the payment and mode of payment (check or cash). The owner has to give you a pink slip indicating that you paid for the car and it is yours now. He cant simply lodge a complaint with the police saying you have stolen his car. It is his duty to inform the DMV office about the sale and transfer of title. You should also apply to DMV for transferring the title to your name. For registration, you will need the pink slip, the insurance (get one immediately) and smog certification. After you apply for the transfer of the vehicle registration into your name, you are the proud owner of the car.

It is too cumbersome to buy a used car from a private party, sometimes it is too risky and in all the cases it is damn cheaper. For some unlucky guys it might have resulted in spending huge money on maintenance the next day. But it is not always true. However, you are supposed to visit the mechanic frequently and spend lot of time there.

Buying from Dealer

The next best thing that you can do is to buy a used car from a dealer. It may not be as cheaper as buying from private party, but 100 times more reliable. Even some dealers give warranty on the used cars they sale. They buy the used cars, clean them up, do a thorough checking of the engine and repair any damages, dents etc before putting them on sale. You don’t have to take the car to a mechanic for inspection, worry about the smog certification. But never forget to check the approximate price through KBB and have a CarFax report handy before making a deal with the dealer. Normally, good dealers don’t keep cars for sale that have any major issues like bad accident history, salvaged title etc.

Go to the dealer, talk to the sales representative about your purpose. He/she will show you all the different used cars they have that fits your requirement as well as your budget. Once you have selected the model, make and color, go for a test drive (don’t forget to check the odometer reading). If everything feels ok to you, then go to the dealers office and access their computer to logon to KBB for approximate pricing as well as to CarFax for accident/maintenance history for that car. Some dealers even do this for free. Now with all these things handy, start the bargain. You must always consider the worry free deal with the worth of the vehicle you are paying for. You may end up paying a little more than that of a private party deal, but there wont be any worries after you buy the car. If there will be any problem with the car (which is covered under warranty), you can always comeback to the dealer for having it fixed for free. The dealer may also arrange a loan for you and take care of the other formalities like title transfer etc. You will save a lot of time/worries in this. Time is important and costly in this country. So it is your call again.

After you finalize the deal, it follows the same process as a new car purchase. So finish all paper work and drive the car safely back home.

Tips

* If you own an old used car that needs maintenance and the mechanic gives you a list of jobs to be done, then do all of them once. That way you may save a lot of labor charge.

* As per my experience, buying a new car is always better than buying a used car from a dealer and buying a used car from a dealer is always safer than buying a used car from a third party.

* It seems to be a huge amount in the beginning to buy a new car. But if you compare the money spent for new (repay the loan) and used car (repair/maintenance), then over a period of 3 years they will almost equate with each other. So, why not to enjoy the ride of a new car.

Trigger Your Home Based Business To Success With A Good Home Office.

Seldom do we come across someone starting a home-based business at the spur of the moment. A decision such as this is often made after much thought and deliberation. You are probably no exception. Once you have made this decision, you owe it to yourself to set up a good home office with good working conditions that will inspire and motivate you to spend a few hours within and put in your best effort. A good home office and good working conditions are a necessity so that your work does not get interrupted, your documents remain safe and you remain focused on your job.

Location, Location:

When you are in the look out for a property, location gets top priority. Similarly the location of your home office too should be given top priority. Unlike in a spacious house with several rooms, a small house or flat can be tricky, especially if you have customers coming in to see you, or you need to have discussions with business colleagues. A room in the front portion of the house with windows overlooking beautiful scenery will be the ideal set up. Though this is the ideal, this does not preclude you from setting up a good and pleasant home office within your means, in a part of a living room, basement, attic, garage or any free space to start with.

Ventilation and Fresh Air:

This aspect of fresh air and ventilation is ignored or overlooked more often when a home office is set up in a rather small house or flat. I t is important that provision is made for the supply or flow of fresh air into your work place. Working long hours in a stuffy room can lead to nausea, headache and a depressed feeling due to lack of fresh air. This will result in a drop in efficiency and the success of your home-based business will be in jeopardy.

Color:

To create a good working environment, considerable thought has to be given to choosing the proper colors for the walls. Psychologists consider that color can influence your mood and the amount of time you would like to spend in your workplace. Dark colors make you tense and irritable. On the other hand light pastel shades such as yellow, blue and green are considered warm, soothing and reassuring. Furthermore these colors inspire and encourage you to spend more working hours in your home office.

Furniture, Equipment and Fixtures:

It is essential that your home office is equipped with the basic furniture and fixtures necessary for the successful operation of your home-based business. Items that you will require are a table, two chairs, a telephone, filing cabinet, computer, printer and scanner, table lamp, trays and book-case. A good comfortable chair should take pride of place since you have to spend several hours a day working in your office.Excessive expenditure is unwise at the start and can be detrimental. If you do not have much money to equip your home office, it will be wise to shop around for good second hand furniture and equipment and cut down your initial costs.

Lighting:

Natural lighting is the best way of illuminating your office during the day time. If that is not possible, alternate arrangements have to be made.

More often than not your home office is a new creation within the confines of your home and the chances are that the lighting there-in will be inadequate.

Your home office has to be properly illuminated, especially your place of work. Bad lighting can lead to health problems such as headache, eye strain and fatigue.

Tax Benefits:

All entrepreneurs working from home are entitled to tax benefits when you set up your home office.
You can claim running expenses for the space and the time it is utilized as a home office. Deductions can also be made for a proportion of telephone expenses, light, power, cleaning and maintenance. In addition to the above you can claim as a home based business entrepreneur a proportion of the occupying expenses in connection of the whole house.
